That is not a reliable test regular black plastic (if it's soft enough) can make black marks on paper.

Bakelite is a softer material and accepts color easier. Catalin is harder, accepts color easily too and tends to be translucent. Bakelite is always opaque. You can hear the difference if you tap a bakelite button on a glass, granite, marble table versus a catalin button.
